Dear TCoL: AI Systems and Hype Are Overwhelming

Question: I just recently formed a new company and the hype and choices around AI systems and the best one to use for our business is crazy. Can you layout a focused way to start getting into using AI and some simple, practical tips for using AI?

Glad to. This is a great topic for a full article—but let me hit the highlights here.

I’ll assume you believe AI could be integral to your new business and you're weighing subscription options to get the best bang for your buck. It would help to know more about what your business does, so, feel free to email us at [email protected] so we can tailor this a bit more.

Here you go:

Rule #1: Learn one system well.
ChatGPT, Grok, and Perplexity are still leading the way for SMB owners. Pick one and get good at it. Learn how to prompt it, how it thinks, and where it breaks. Then try the others. Do you need to know trending social media issues? Start with Grok.

Rule #2: Assume it’s partially wrong.
After asking a system to research something, follow up with:
“Verify the accuracy of all content you just provided. List any errors and how you'd fix them.”
You’ll be amazed by what it catches—and what it admits.

Rule #3: Make it learn from the right source.
This one matters most. Don’t ask:
“Write an ad in the style of David Ogilvy.”
Do ask:
“Write an ad in the style of David Ogilvy. Learn only from original material created by him.”
That subtle shift—cutting out third-party commentary—improves your results dramatically. There is way too much out there from people commenting on things that they don’t understand. Use this tip to help filter them out of your results.

Thanks for the great question, and good luck!
